Heaton Park 4-0 Shrubs

A comfortable win, as a combination of excellent finishing and a strong defence, saw us beat Shrubs 4-0.

We struggled last season with a lack of squad depth, which was something we were determined to improve on. And we saw the benefit, as with Darren injured and Ryan ill, we could call on very able replacements in Yossi B and Ben. Yossi G also showed his versatility, playing defence, midfield and attack, at various points in the game.

Aron opened the scoring, pressing high and winning the ball, finishing well off the post. He then turned provider, showing good feet to feed Yossi G, just before half time.

The front two and Yaakov showcased some great moves and understanding between each other, while at the back the defence, led superbly by Gary, restricted Shrubs to shots from distance, Sruli celebrating his return with a very deserved clean sheet.

Ben found Aron in the second half to make it 3-0, before Ben himself won the ball back to complete the scoring.

And it could have been even better, as he then crashed a ferocious shot against the bar and on to the line.

Inter-Shul Football Update

A close game where, on the evidence of the first 20 minutes, we did not deserve to lose. But, ultimately, not taking chances, and some defensive lapses, saw us lose 4-3 in our semi-final against Windsor Road.

After a period of intense pressure, Yaakov bent a volley past the goalkeeper, after a shot from Ryan was saved. Older readers may recall Zinedine Zidane against Bayer Leverkusen, in the 2002 Champions League Final.

We continued to create chances, Yaakov, Ryan and Aron all going close. In between Jared, in goal, pulled off a great double save. But after a 3-on-2 that we could not convert, Windsor Road found an equaliser.

A change in personnel at that point, as an injured Darren was replaced by Yoni, did not slow us down too much, and Ryan made it 2-1.

Unfortunately, we could not see out the half, and with virtually the last kick, Windsor Road equalised again.

The second half started at a slower pace, but, having gone 3-2 up courtesy of Aron, we once more could not hold on to the lead, a first-time shot followed by another goal, gave Windsor Road the lead for the first time in the match.

Jared continued to pull off some phenomenal saves, including a fantastic stop from a 1-on-1, with Windsor Road also hitting the bar and post. We continued to press and came close ourselves. Yaakov’s shot from a clever free kick bounced on the line and out, with the keeper beaten, Aron saw his own 1-on-1 saved, and Ryan slipped at the crucial moment, as we could not force extra-time.

MANAGER’S COLUMN

As the dust settles on this season’s League and Cup endeavours, we can look back on a campaign that can probably best be described as ‘almost’. We were one positive result away from taking the league down to the final game, and indeed the result between Young Lubavitch and Whitefield was one which would have favoured us, had we been in a position to take advantage.

In the Cup, 4 wins from 5 in the group stage, and a close game in the semi-final, put us in sight of the final, but ultimately we just could not get over the line, although the display was far better than last season’s semi-final, when a lack of available players hit us hard.

Talking of players, it was great to have two outstanding goalkeepers in Sruli and Jared, backed as always by the excellent defensive work of Darren and Gary. Yaakov linked defence and attack effectively, contributing as well with goals and assists, with Yossi also showcasing his ability when available. And upfront, Aron and Ryan worked as well together as always, a particular highlight surely being the ‘ghost’ game where, between them, they scored 15 goals, with Mordy also adding his skillset into the mix as well.

So, as much as it is disappointing that we did not collect silverware this season, and although results faded over the last few weeks, we have still improved, from 5th to 3rd in the League, and from being within reach of the Cup Final, where we looked more like the side we are capable of being.

The first stage was for each side to nominate players from their own team, after which there will be a shortlist of players from across the league, which we will be able to vote on.

Inter-Shul Football Cup Update

With qualification to the semi-final assured, and results elsewhere earlier in the evening sealing top spot, it gave us an opportunity to look at different options. But perhaps the best thing about the 6-1 defeat to Vine Street is that there is a lot less write-up required for this report.

One thing we are always guaranteed is a great Sruli save onto the bar, and, not as frequent but still regular, is a good run and goal from Gary, and both obliged, but ultimately Vine Street had a plan that worked, and whilst we learnt lessons which will benefit us in future games, the rest of the group remains wide open, with 3 teams still able to go through in second place.

A close contest as we overcame Adas Yisroel 5-4, with our fourth win from four in the Cup seeing us through to the semi-final with a game to spare.

It did take us a while to settle, perhaps in part due to having not played for a number of weeks, and it was Adas who opened the scoring, via a deflection. We hit back almost immediately, with a good team goal involving Darren, Gary and Ryan, before Yaakov created space to finish.

The game continued to be end-to-end, Aron hitting the bar from a shot on the turn, and Adas going even closer when the ball came back off the inside of the post. We were then fortunate that the ball broke free to Ryan from an Adas corner, giving him time and space to finish well. Adas equalised again before good footwork from Ryan to find Aron, to make it 3-2. Once more we could not hold on, and from a corner headed out, a wonderful first-time volley meant we were all-square at the break.

The half-time team talk focused on closing down space and better passing, and gradually we improved, with better interplay between the front three, and when Yaakov lifted the ball to Ryan, he made it 4-3.

Adas were not finished yet, and again came back to level the score. We kept up the pressure though and, from a corner, Ryan played the ball to Yaakov, to allow us to retake the lead.

Despite the scoreline, Sruli had made some wonderful saves, with Darren and Gary also making blocks and interceptions, particularly towards the end, as Adas looked for a share of the points. This enabled us to finally see the game out, and allow us to start looking ahead to the next stage.

A physical battle in our latest Cup game, against Young Whitefield, in which both goalkeepers deserved praise. Ultimately, we prevailed 3-1 to move to the top of our group.

Young Whitefield began strongly, pressing from the front, but it was us who took the lead, Gary playing the ball to Yaakov, who waited for the opportune moment before lifting the ball high into the net. Young Whitefield came back quickly, though, capitalising on a loose ball to net the equaliser.

This set the pattern for the first half, with both defences made to work hard. Yaakov, Aron and Ryan all had good chances, particularly a shot that rolled across the line and hit the post. At the other end, Darren and Gary found themselves in a real battle, with Jay in goal saving anything that got through, including a shot that took a double deflection.

Yossi came on and made some good runs, and Akiva made his debut, holding the ball up well. He did create a great chance for Ryan, intercepting a goal-kick, but the goalkeeper recovered to push the attempt onto the bar.

Having a strong bench meant we could try different things, with Mordy coming on at half-time to replace Akiva. We continued to create chances: Yossi attempting to find Ryan with a through-ball, Darren with a good ball to Mordy that was tipped around the post, and Ryan carrying the ball well but being forced wide, with the opportunity rolling agonisingly wide, just some of them.

Yaakov was then fouled on the edge of the area, and from the free-kick, Mordy moved the ball on to Yaakov, who finished in a similar fashion to his first goal.

Young Whitefield were not done yet, but Darren and Gary, along with Jay, continued to frustrate them. It meant that we had opportunities to catch them on the break, but a mix of brilliant goalkeeping and missed chances meant that there were still some nerves going into the final few minutes. Mordy was unlucky to just stray into the area before finishing well, but finally Aron, who had earlier hit the post, won the ball back twice to give himself space and time and give us breathing space as a fantastic game came to an end.

A solid performance gave us back-to-back 5-1 wins, as we returned to league action.

We started well, holding onto and moving the ball well, and Yaakov set up Ryan, who was unmarked, with a great through-ball, to make it 1-0. Although Shrubs briefly pegged it back to 1-1, our lead was restored when Ryan found Aron, and he controlled the pass brilliantly to give himself time to finish.

Strong defending was required, as Shrubs looked to again get back into the game, but Darren and Gary stood firm and Sruli dealt with anything that did get through, including a stunning one-handed push around the post. Particularly impressive was how quickly we won the ball back, and how we defended as a team.

Ryan made it 3-1, drawing gasps from the crowd, as he cut inside and bent his shot perfectly into the far corner. With Shrubs then down to 5 men, following a foul on Aron, Mordy came on for the last few minutes of the half, and with almost his first touch, and from an angle, found the back of the net impressively.

We had chances to add to the lead in the second half, with some great pressure and really good passing. Ryan completed his hat-trick, finishing well from half-way inside opposition territory, and, when Shrubs did attack, Darren and Gary were strong, with Sruli pulling off further good saves, and both defenders making some crucial interceptions and clearances as the game came to an end.

We put the disappointment of the previous game behind us, as we recorded a 4-3 win over Adas Yisroel.

We started the stronger, as some neat passing moves led to early chances being created, although it took us until halfway through the first half to take the lead. In the absence of Ryan, Yoni had come into the team, which enabled Darren and Gary to make good forward runs, one of these leading to the opening goal, as Gary finished in off the post.

Yaakov then made it 2, and with Sruli finding Aron with good long balls from the back, it was surely a matter of time before we added to the lead, and indeed Aron did score, with Yaakov then making it 4-1, Adas having pulled a goal back before this.

We perhaps relaxed a bit at this stage, giving Adas opportunities, and with them having made it 4-3, it led to a more nervous end to the game than we would have liked. However, the 3 points took us back up to second in the table, and with Whitefield losing, there is all to play for as we enter the final stretches of the league campaign.

The Cup competition has this year been integrated into the league campaign, with the format being the same as last year, with a group stage, semi and final.

There will be 11 teams in the competition, meaning one group of 5 and one of 6.

The draw for the group stage was done earlier this week, and the groups are as follows:

A frustrating night saw us slip to third in the table, as Whitefield won 5-0.

A fairly even start as both sides traded shots but it was Whitefield who took the lead when they won the ball back.

This set the pattern for the game, Whitefield looking to hit us on the break and allowing us very little breathing room, and a 3 on 2 gave them a 2-0 lead at half-time.

We started the second half strongly, putting good pressure on Whitefield, but Whitefield stuck to their plan and added further goals, to cement their grip on the game.
