The Inter-Shul Football League

Inter-Shul Football League Update

We put the disappointment of the previous game behind us, as we recorded a 4-3 win over Adas Yisroel.

We started the stronger, as some neat passing moves led to early chances being created, although it took us until halfway through the first half to take the lead. In the absence of Ryan, Yoni had come into the team, which enabled Darren and Gary to make good forward runs, one of these leading to the opening goal, as Gary finished in off the post.

Yaakov then made it 2, and with Sruli finding Aron with good long balls from the back, it was surely a matter of time before we added to the lead, and indeed Aron did score, with Yaakov then making it 4-1, Adas having pulled a goal back before this.

We perhaps relaxed a bit at this stage, giving… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

A frustrating night saw us slip to third in the table, as Whitefield won 5-0.

A fairly even start as both sides traded shots but it was Whitefield who took the lead when they won the ball back.

This set the pattern for the game, Whitefield looking to hit us on the break and allowing us very little breathing room, and a 3 on 2 gave them a 2-0 lead at half-time.

We started the second half strongly, putting good pressure on Whitefield, but Whitefield stuck to their plan and added further goals, to cement their grip on the game.

Inter-Shul Football League Update

A tough game, but ultimately we prevailed 3-2, as we kept our position at the top of the table, heading into the Winter break.

We created numerous chances in the first half, and really should have gone in at least a few goals up. Some good saves from the Vine Street stand-in goalkeeper, and the post coming to their rescue twice, meant it was 1-1 at half-time. Gary had opened the scoring, after being fed in by Aron, Vine Street equalising after a strong run.

The second half saw more good work, and a number of saves from Vine Street. We eventually made it 2-1, with a move that started from the back. Gary passed to Sruli from a throw-in, his first-time ball to Aron was chested to Ryan, who returned the ball, and from a narrow an… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

A late withdrawal and a change in personnel did not stop us bouncing back to winning ways, as we beat Lubavitch Boys Minyan 8-5. With Darren unfortunately suffering a hamstring injury before the game, Aron moved back into defence, and Mordy started up front.

In the wake of last week’s defeat, a team meeting was held to see if there was anything different we needed to do. And it seemed to work, as an early flowing move, starting with Sruli in goal into the defence and up to Yaakov, ended with Ryan making it 1-0.

Some defending was then required, Sruli pulling off a great save, and Gary getting in the way of shots, before Ryan intercepted a Lubavitch goal-kick, to mak… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

The only positive on a night when our unbeaten record came to an end, as Whitefield won 5-1, was that the Rabbi got to watch only his second ever game of football.

Whitefield scored early on before Aron equalised, and most of the rest of the first half was fairly even, as both sides looked to add to the score.

Yaakov hit the post with a great shot, and Aron and Ryan had chances, but two quick goals just before half-time gave Whitefield a grip on the game that they never let go of.

What was disappointing was the referee allowing a lot of on-the-edge tackles, although he finally took action towards the end of the second half, with Whitefield briefly reduced to 5 men, as one of their players was sin-binned. By this… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

There was no game for us this week, as we enjoyed a break before our top-of-the table clash with Whitefield, which kicks off at 8pm on Sunday at Maccabi.

Rumours that the Rabbi may be there to watch are as yet unconfirmed.

Inter-Shul Football League Update

Yossi signed off in style, ahead of a 6-month absence, as he claimed a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Holy Law.

The two opening goals were identical as Ryan played a through-ball each time that took the defence out, and Yossi finished well from both to give us a 2-0 lead.

At this point we were creating the majority of the chances, with some good saves from their goalkeeper and a number of shots that were deflected but Holy Law were applying their own pressure, and from a loose ball in the middle of the pitch, they shot and halved the deficit.

We continued to play our own game and fashion opportunities, with some good build-up play from the back, but Holy Law were defending well. Just before the break, Ryan got back well to stop a Holy Law a… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

We were determined that the events of last week were Never Gonna Bring Me (or us) Down and, indeed, we had the Time Of Our Lives, in 7th Heaven, as we returned to the top of the table, beating Vine Street 7-0. It may have been rather wet out there but we could Dance In The Rain.

The game started off fairly tight but two quick goals gave us a grip that we were never going to relinquish. First, Ryan with a backheel to Yaakov, who scored with a rising shot, and then Aron intercepted a throw-out from the keeper to finish.

We kept up the pressure, and it was good to see that we … Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

A simply sensational performance as we blew OJ away 19-0. Ryan became the first player to hit double figures in a single game as he claimed 10, Aron chipped in with 5 of his own, while debutant Yossi Gitlin, standing in for the unavailable Yaakov, grabbed 4.

Sruli gained his first clean sheet, ably assisted by a classy performance from Darren and Gary. Every time we had the ball we looked dangerous, and some of the interplay between our players was breathtaking, with OJ just not able to cope.

Yossi opened the scoring in the first minute after Darren had superbly got himself out of a tight situation on his own byline and it was one-way traffic fr… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

Every single one of the team played their part in a thrilling 9-5 win over Young Lubavitch. Both teams came into the game on the back of high scoring results last time out, so this was a fixture to really look forward to, and it did not disappoint.

Young Lubavitch fielded an inexperienced goalkeeper due to illness, and we took an early lead, when Aron shot from just outside the penalty area and then, from a tight angle, made it 2-0. With pressure being applied from the front, particularly from Ryan, we were able to keep attacking. Aron scuffed a shot wide, and then a great passing move, from Sruli to Darren to Aron, onto Yaakov and back to Aron, was lifted over the bar.

Young Lubavitch were lookin… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

A tougher game than what we have faced over the last few weeks, but a good test and 3 more points on the board, as we triumphed 4-2 over Shrubbs.

The first part of the first half was fairly even, as both sides had chances. With Aron away, Yossi had replaced him up front and he and Ryan were linking up well to create opportunities. Yaakov was playing well in the middle, dropping to help the defence and also supporting the attack. And we were grateful to Jay in goal, himself a late replacement for Sruli, for some smart saves.

We were awarded a penalty, due to a backpass being picked up by the goalkeeper, and Ryan dispatched this to give us a 1-0 lead, and we continued to fashion chances: Yossi carrying the ball well on a number of occasions… Read More »

Inter-Shul Football League Update

What a difference a week makes and what a message we have sent to the rest of the league, as we dismantled Windsor Road 9-2.

With Ryan back from injury, and with not having played this season yet with this team, it understandably took us time to gel, but from the outset it was clear to see that there was more passing and the runs being made were being taken advantage of. We were also able to mix things up more, with the option of playing it out from the back, as well as being able to play it long.

Despite this, it was Windsor Road who took the lead, Hudi once more coming back to haunt us as he rolled the ball in. But we did not let our heads drop and started to put real pressure on, although the keeper was equal to these. … Read More »
