Inter-Shul Football Summer Cup

Thursday, 20 June, 2024 - 5:48 pm

How does the Cup work?

  • The format of the cup is group style, so every team is guaranteed at least 5 games.
  • There are 2 groups, with each team playing the others in their group once.
  • The top two in each group go through to the semi-finals.
  • The Final will be Sunday 4th August.
  • Stuart Delmonte has kindly donated The Marilyn Delmonte Trophy for this year's winners.

The Inter-Shul Summer Cup started this week, and we were delighted to open our campaign with a 4-0 win over Shrubberies.

We had already discussed where we needed to strengthen after last season, and defence was definitely an area where we had to improve. In one of those funny twists often unique to football, we began this season against our final opponents of last season. Then we had held onto an 8-7 win after being 8-3 up, so it was great to start off with a clean sheet.

Scoring goals had not been a problem, in fact, we scored only one goal less than the highest scorers, but could we cope with the loss of our Golden Boot winner?

Darren Cohen and Gary Lederberg, making his debut, were excellent at the back, Yaakov Wilson was dictating things in the middle of the pitch, and Aron Frankel came close on several occasions to opening the scoring.

Although it was still 0-0 after around 25 minutes, we were creating the better chances and looked the more likely to score, and this was the case when Aron got his first, and then, when Yoni Finlay put the Shrubberies defence under pressure, grabbed his second.

Mordy Garbe played an excellent ball for the third goal, finished superbly by Yaakov. And with Shrubberies pushing to get something from the game, although Sruli Bengio in goal dealt with anything that came his way, we broke away with a 3 on 1 attack and Aron found Yaakov for his second and our fourth.
